Year 1 - Spring Term 2 Newsletter

Welcome back – Where did that half term break go? This term our learning theme will move from ‘By the Sea’ to ‘Under the Sea’. We have started this theme with the delightful story of ‘Billy’s Bucket’ by Kes Gray and Garry Parsons. This is a fun story, where we can learn how to make our writing much more interesting by adding adjectives to give more detail.

We would like to say a BIG thank you to all of you who managed to complete your half term family challenge, to create some under the sea creatures from recycled materials. We have been blown away at how much effort you have put into making such fantastic creatures. We hope you enjoyed making them together. The children have really enjoyed being able to talk about them and use them to inspire their writing.

As well as this lovely story, we will also be reading ‘Someone Swallowed Stanley’ by Sarah Roberts and ‘The Journey Home’ by Frann Preston-Gannon and looking at the problems of plastic and rubbish filling our oceans. We will then be linking this very important subject in geography, where we will be taking a closer look at the different oceans, the wonderful wildlife that live there and how we can help to look after these.

In science, we will be looking at the human body, finding out how we can keep ourselves healthy, with a healthy diet, the importance of exercise and keeping our bodies clean. In Maths, we will be looking at investigating 3D shapes and introducing money. This will be a lovely opportunity to play shops at home using your small change to buy things with the correct money.

In PE, we will be continuing to further our ball skills, in particular invasion games. If you haven’t done so already, please could you make sure your child has their PE kit in school.

Thanks as always for your ongoing support.
